Australia named top dream destination on TripAdvisor

Australia has appeared in the ‘top three’ list of ideal travel destinations for travellers from Austria, Canada, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US according to TripAdvisor’s third TripBarometer study.

Australia also topped the ‘must visit’ list for families and came in second for millennials and retirees. The study also showed increased confidence for Australian tourism businesses, with three in four optimistic about their own profitability. The bi-annual TripBarometer survey reveals global travel trends based on responses from more than 61,000 respondents.

TripAdvisor is one of the world’s most-trusted travel sites. It has mass appeal because of the genuine reviews written by real travellers. Nabbing a title like top dream destination and must-visit for families will be hugely positive for Australia’s tourism and how people across the globe perceive the country.

The study also found that 92% of Australian hoteliers believe reviews are influential in generating bookings, so having a reputation boost like this for the country on a reputable review site is nothing to be scoffed at.

When asked to name their dream destination if money were no object, the most commonly cited countries… were Oz and Italy.

Europe emerged the overall favourite region, with 71% of global travellers naming a European country as their top destination.

On the flipside, the most popular country among Europeans is the US.

The latest instalment of TripAdvisor’s bi-annual survey highlights global travel trends and aims to capture the zeitgeist of travel today.

The report also found generational divides when it comes to travel preferences. While Italy, Australia, the US, France and New Zealand figure among the top five dream destinations across all generations, millennials bucked the trend, knocking New Zealand out and replacing it with the UK.

For the survey, more than 60,000 respondents were polled in 32 markets, spanning seven regions around the world.

Here are the top 10 destinations cited by travellers when asked which countries they'd like to visit in the next two years, if money were no object:

For Australians, travelling abroad is more attractive than visiting local attractions. Those who responded to the survey cited Canada and Italy as their dream destinations.

The U.S. was the top-of-mind destination Aussies would actually visit in 2015. For families around the world, Australia is their top destination while millennials chose Italy as their dream vacation.

Among the retirees who responded to the survey, both Australia and Italy tied at the top spot. TripAdvisor's report also revealed that Australians plan to do more international vacations than domestic holidays.
