The Highs & Lows of a Family RV Holiday in the USA

So, you`ve seen the movie with Robbin Williams and you know a family RV trip through the great outdoors of American can build family memories but with the adventure comes stress.

On the one hand families can sleep in the same bed night after night and bring some home comforts to keep the kids occupied. They save money on food by cooking in, can be spontaneous when they discover an eccentric spot (or fellow campers) that they love or hate, and they can see more of the real America in between the touristy parts.

However, in a country with high gun ownership, hotels may offer more peace of mind that venturing out alone. There is the stress of dealing with a large vehicle and getting used to driving on the other side of the road.  But with planning, nothing tops this classic family adventure.

Hiring an RV

Hiring an RV is one of the easiest parts with companies requiring no more than a full (international) driving license and a major credit card. A $500 damage deposit is usually required.  Well-known and respectable rental companies include El Monte (elmonterv.com) and Road Bear (roadbearrv.com).

British tourist Kate McCann who wrote about her family RV trip in an article for the Uk Guardian suggests a 25ft Class C vehicle with a double bed over the cabin for a family of four. “RVs with slide out sections – which expand the living space by two or three feet when you are at a standstill – are invaluable.”

She says you may find yourself competing with locals in their giant 40 footers at times and recommends a rear video camera for backing in and backing out.

The Campsite & RV Parks in the US

Facilities at campsites vary hugely, some have pools and Wi-Fi while others more remote sites just offer long-drop toilets and a patch of dirt (remember Robbin Williams trying to get cell coverage). Some don't allow reservations but the most popular sites do and they can get booked up months ahead. Late June and August is the busiest month with American kids on holiday.

Each national park has its own website, with information on the various campsites offered and you can book online at recreation.gov. A good resource for campsites of all kinds is reserveamerica.com
