David Holland – Principal Strategist

David is based at the delightful coastal city of Mandurah, Western Australia, 72 kilometres south of Perth City. Operating globally though online technologies, He leads a team of highly motivated professional consultants, servicing clients throughout Australia and New Zealand.

With a corporate management and marketing history spanning more than thirty years, for listed and private companies, David operates primarily in the tourism, resource and affordable housing sectors, specialising in innovative concepts for tourist, resource and retirement accommodation projects.

As Manager, Development and Marketing for a publicly listed Australian company, he was responsible for ground-breaking accommodation projects that established it as a market leader in holiday accommodation and lifestyle developments. 

Now operating as Principal of Brighthouse, David is a successful consultant, urban designer, project manager and developer. He is deeply embroiled in the development of alternative housing for resource and infrastructure projects. With a broad knowledge of tourism operations, David provides strategic advice, feasibility and business case studies for projects of all sizes.

As a former operator of holiday parks in Western Australia, he understands the industry well and now provides operational advice to clients on product mix, pricing, budgets, human resources, marketing and training.

A registered builder and an acknowledged professional in relocatable accommodation developments, David also provides consultancy services to federal, state and local government and the private sector. He has a project management role with a select number of projects and is a member of the Australian Institute of Project Management.

David facilitates worker's camps for infrastructure, construction and mining projects for government and resource project operators. Undertaking a variety of project roles he has provided bankable feasibility and business case studies, camp design and forward works engineering, tender documentation, risk management, performance measurement, selection criteria and analysis, project management and contract administration for numerous projects. 

Through Brighthouse, David has worked on many diverse projects outside the accommodation sector, including the Monkey Mia Jetty redevelopment and the Shark Bay Sports, Community, Recreation and Emergency Evacuation Centre, which resulted in successful applications for Royalty for Regions grant funding.

David developed a concept for the legacy tourist use of temporary key worker accommodation facilities, which was adopted for the Ord Irrigation Expansion project in Kununurra. He is currently working with the Shire of Esperance to create a sustainable community legacy use for the temporary accommodation facility required for the major infrastructure project developments under development in the town.

Dedicated to the continuing development of tourism in Western Australia, David is a former Chairman of the Peel Region Tourism Association where he instigated the first tourism reservation and payments portal in Western Australia, Peeltour. David is a former Chair of Judges for the Western Australian Tourism Awards and a Past President of Caravan Industry Australia (WA).

David and his Brighthouse consultancy was commissioned by Tourism WA in 2012 to undertake a major audit of caravanning and camping infrastructure in Western Australia and provide a Strategy for Caravan and Camping in Western Australia, as a framework for strategic planning for the sector during the next decade and beyond.

He has maintained his strong interest in education and training through his appointment to the Governing Council of Challenger Institute of Technology and currently chairs the Governing Council's Planning & Development Sub-committee and the Quinlans Hospitality and Tourism Training Centre’s advisory committee, helping develop successful programs for Challenger Institute of Technology to place trainees in the workplace.

David has a keen interest in indigenous projects including indigenous tourism projects, housing and business incubation. He has worked on projects for Indigenous Business Australia in collaboration with associate consultants, Claire and Adrian Prendergast.

 

 

Michael Sidebottom – Senior Project Consultant

Michael has been involved in the tourism, recreation and mining industries for over fifteen years.  He has an intimate knowledge of front line tourism operations having managed quality tourism properties throughout Western Australia and Queensland.  Michael is well versed all aspects of project management from design and regulatory approvals to project administration and implementation of operational systems.

After gaining relevant business management qualifications Michael combined his knowledge of tourism facility operations and his passion for tourism development to undertake a twelve month project management contract with ASX Listed company Aspen Group, in the design, development and operational roll out of new multi dwelling tourism facilities. Based in Darwin, the role encompassed all facets of project management including land acquisition, due diligence, local government liaison, local and community engagement and cultural awareness.  Along with the Darwin site Michael was also involved in the Aspen Group’s development of five other lifestyle village facilities along the east coast of Australia. 

Through various projects, Michael developed a knowledge of modular building, which has seen him involved in the manufacture and distribution of modular accommodation, park homes, site offices and amenities buildings to suit industries such as mining, tourism, lifestyle, construction and local government.

Michael was involved in the operational roll out and development of mining accommodation for BHP Billiton for the Ravensthorpe Nickel Project.  This required regular consultation with BHP Billiton HR management to ensure the needs and desires of BHP Billiton personnel were incorporated into the final product.

With a strong sporting background, it was inevitable that Michael would be drawn to the recreation industry.  While employed with the YMCA Perth, Michael managed two multi use recreation facilities which included sporting courts, pools, gymnasuims, function rooms, child care and fitness classes.  Being responsible for the complete day to day operations of the facilities, Michael was constantly reviewing community programs, marketing, membership, safety audits and market trends to maintain the viability of the facilities.  The local government owned facilities also required Michael to report monthly to the Bayswater and Rockingham Councils on the membership and financial status of each centre.  Michael was also involved in the refurbishment of the facilities and development of a new large recreation facility for the City of Rockingham utilising his industry knowledge and skills to produce the most efficient designs and deliver a safe and enjoyable facility for the benefit of the local community.

Michael's sport and recreation experience as a player and administrator, also led to a position as Football Manager for the Peel Thunder Football Club in the West Australian Football League.  Responsible for such tasks as player contracts, facility management and staff employment, Michael was involved in the redevelopment of the Rushton Park facility in conjunction with the WA Football Commission.

In his current role as senior project consultant at Brighthouse, Michael has produced and implemented numerous feasibility and business case studies for local government and the private sector.  Michael also develops and implements standards compliant policy and procedure documents for a range of industries.

His "hands on" approach to project administration and management ensures the projects are delivered on time and on budget.

 

Adrian Prendergast – Associate

Adrian is an excellent communicator, mentor and facilitator who specialises in Indigenous engagement.  He has worked with over 50 Indigenous individuals, businesses and communities to provide one on one mentoring, small group training and facilitate multi stakeholder workshops. 

His friendly ‘can-do’ attitude ensures that clients and their stakeholders are provided with the encouragement, tools, training and support required to achieve success and forge long term partnerships.

He is experienced in working in remote settings, particularly in the Kimberley region of WA and northern NT. He has in depth knowledge of business operations across a diverse range of industries including tourism, hospitality, horticulture, mining, retail, transport and training.  He has assisted businesses and communities to improve their commercial outcomes and has also worked with larger stakeholder groups, government departments and associations to develop Indigenous employment and business strategies and conduct reviews and growth planning sessions. 

He has an honest, empathetic, engaging and down to earth approach to communication. Having experienced both living and working in remote Aboriginal communities, he understands the importance of building up rapport and the need to agree on clear objectives before opening up discussion.  He is an effective facilitator; helping individuals, families, businesses, communities and government clients to reach agreement and define their aspirations in order to work out a clear way forward in order to bring their plans to fruition.

His specialist consultancy, Starfish Business Solutions is on the panel for DEEWR’s Indigenous Employment Program and Indigenous Business Australia.

 

Claire Prendergast – Associate

Coming from a strong marketing and strategic management background, Claire holds a Bachelor of Commerce and has had extensive experience across the government, corporate and small business sector.  As co-owner of Starfish Business Solutions, she works with Indigenous and mainstream businesses assisting with strategic planning, research, product development, business planning, marketing, accreditation and financial analysis. 

Prior to setting up Starfish, Claire worked with husband Adrian to manage a multi award winning Aboriginal community owned wilderness camp, Kooljaman at Cape Leveque.  During this time Claire was an elected Board Member of Australia’s North West Tourism and established extensive networks in the tourism industry.  Claire has also held the position of Marketing Manager for Perth Airport as well as a number of senior marketing positions in small and large organisations, including Telstra.

Claire has recently been appointed to sit on the Federal Governments Small Business Advisory Committee.  She has a breadth of experience across a number of industries including retail, tourism, hospitality and contracting services.  In addition to working with a vast number of small and aspiring business owners, her government clients have included Tourism Australia, Tourism Western Australia, Indigenous Business Australia, DEEWR, Shire of Upper Gascoyne.  She has also worked with a number of Indigenous and non-Indigenous associations including Tourism Council WA, Ardi Indigenous Tourism Operators Association and Kullarri Regional CDEP Inc.

 

Scott Hardy – Associate

Scott has over 20 years work experience predominately within the Oil and Gas industry in both technical and senior management roles and holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Professional Accounting.

He now operates Model Business Analysis as the principal consultant Financial Analyst, providing services in financial modelling, management reporting, financial analysis, project evaluation and cost tracking through specially developed financial modelling programs. Consulting to small to medium enterprises, he delivers services over a broad range of industries including oil and gas, energy, commercial property developments, civil contracting, resource mining and tourism developments.

Scott has extensive practical experience in the development of financial working models through the use of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets including: DCF modeling, economic evaluation of company hedging positions, national royalty and tax schemes and unpaid capital positions, performance and sensitivity analysis, project valuation cost tracking models, and depreciation schedules.

As a consultant project manager on major civil construction projects Scott has recently been involved in the Beenyup Water Trial and Red Hill Auditorium projects. He has been involved in many facility upgrades and new installations.  His practical experience in writing HSE procedures and specific work methodology such as; commissioning start up procedures & installation methodology maintains his close involvement in infrastructure project management.

Scott’s ability to liaise with both management and the direct labour workforce allows him to influence outcomes and deliver common objectives with a cohesive approach.

Scott adds considerable strength to the financial capabilities of the Brighthouse consultancy and his graphic presentation of financial information provides clients of non-accounting backgrounds, clear and definitive financial reporting on project proposals.
